If you have your ear to the ground when it comes to the cosmetic industry, you would have heard the word parabens crop up from time to time. Often they are seen in a bad light, even being said to be carcinogenic. But what are parabens and are they really bad for you?
Have you noticed that many skincare products make a big deal of the fact that they are paraben free? If not, go have a scrounge around your bathroom cabinet and you are sure to find at least two that do not contain this preservative.
Parabens are one of the most common preservatives used to stop microbes, bacteria and fungus breeding in cosmetic products such as moisturisers. Especially due to the fact that most of the time, they are stored in your bathroom, a bacteria playground thanks to all the moisture going on.
Take a look at the back of some of your products, spot any of these: methylparaben, ethulparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben or isobutlparaben? Yup, those are all parabens and they have been a talking point in the cosmetic industry for quite some time now.
One of the biggest concerns is that there has been a spike in breast cancer that can be linked in part to parabens. When the cancerous tumours were tested, parabens, disguised as estrogen was found. There is also talk that because of this result, parabens could also be the cause of a rise in testicular cancer and a decline in sperm count.
Nothing has been completely set in stone or proven beyond the shadow of a doubt but most people are very cautious, choosing to rather be safe than sorry when it comes to parabens in their cosmetic products.
If you are concerned, it seems obvious that the solution to the problem would be to use paraben free products. However, while there are a fair amount around, their shelf life tends to be shorter than those that do contain parabens, and often, they need to be stored in the fridge which many people find inconvenient.
Parabens are here to stay for a while, but scientists in the know seem certain that they will be phased out within ten years and that the alternative will be just as good.
